Principal’s Corner: A Message from Principal Kamau
Dear Warner Families:
The first week of school is complete! The alarm seems to go off way too early, but the love of school makes it a joy to get up and get going.
I was glad to see many parents come out to the volunteer meeting on Friday, August 19th. If you did not attend the meeting and you would like to volunteer in the classroom, you are required to complete an online application athttps://families.lausd.net/volunteers followed by obtaining TB clearance from your healthcare provider. Bring the clearance to the office to complete the application process. The application requests a school code. It is 7616 and your child’s ID is simply their name.
A new Warner Avenue School website has been launched. Ms. Sabrina IsHak has spent months working on it. Visithttps://warneravenueelementary.com. Thank you Ms. IsHak, it was a much needed update! We will continue to reduce paper communication as we upload all resources onto the website.
This past summer, the teachers’ lounge was rebuilt and decorated by two, far and beyond generous dads; Mr. Dale Robinson and Mr. Jonah Borris. Mr. Don Wyse also generously replaced the stove. In addition, Mr. Robinson also power-washed the entire school, building and grounds. We thank you Mr. Wyse. On behalf of Warner teachers and staff, we are deeply grateful to Mr. Wyse, Mr. Borris and Mr. Robinson. This group of men saw a need and stepped in to bridge the gap. Words are not enough, but please know that we are filled with gratitude.
Friday breakfast was an awesome treat Ms. Jamee Natella! Merci Beaucoup!
Lastly, students came home with a manila packet on Thursday orFriday. Please take some uninterrupted time to review the school rules, no bullying policy, safe cyber use, and dress code policy with your child(ren). Both parents and child sign the paperwork and the signature page is returned to the teacher on Monday, August 22nd. I would like to emphasize that students may not use their cell phones in school. Cell phones must be kept in backpacks on silence. Students may use their cell phones after school to call a parent for pick up only.
On Monday, August 22nd there is a WAVE meeting in Banooni Auditorium immediately following our Monday assembly. Drive cautiously or best of all be early to avoid last minute anxiety of finding parking.
I wish you a wonderful weekend and a great second week of school!
Be Well: Be Kind
Agnes Kamau, Principal
Message About Warner Annual Fund
Dear Warner Families:
Welcome back (or welcome if you are a new family) to 2016-17 school year and launch of the Warner Annual Fund Drive!
WAVE Foundation established the Annual Fund to bridge the gap between basic district funding with essential 21st century resources, services and equipment necessary to promote a highly successful learning environment. We cannot afford to take Warner’s excellence for granted. Public funding alone does not guarantee academic excellence for our children. That’s why your donation is critical.
Your child should have brought home an Annual Fund brochure earlier this week in their backpack. if you did not get one, there are extra brochures outside the office or you can download a brochure by clicking HERE.
Annual Fund contributions can be made online via credit card or bill pay via your checking account atwww.warneravenueelementary.com/warner-annual-fund/. Donations are tax-deductible and can be made in full or in three or six installments.
The Annual Fund is the school’s highest giving priority as it supports the educational and enrichment programs that make Warner unique. Our children are counting on our support.
Please consider making your gift to the Annual Fund today! Each gift provides an immediate and direct benefit to our children.
Thank you in advance for your generosity and best wishes for a wonderful school year.
Please join us on tomorrow, Monday, August 22nd, in the Banooni Family Auditorium (right after assembly), for the first meeting of the year. Hear from Principal Kamau and parent leaders about all the exciting things your parent/teacher organization has planned for this year. Your attendance is strongly encouraged!
is the official website for WAVE, the parent-teacher organization that supports enrichment and education at Warner Avenue Elementary.
You will find links to our 2016-2017 calendar (download it to your phone!), a list of event chairs and committee heads, list of WAVE Officers and Directors, various downloadable and online forms, and much, much more.
STAR Registration for Nova #1
The brochures for the STAR Nova #1 Enrichment classes went outon Friday. Please check your children’s backpacks for the brochure.
STAR highly recommends signing up through the “mail in” registration process, which starts on Tuesday, August 23rd.
Your best opportunity for getting into the classes you want is by mailing the form on Tuesday, however your chances are still good if you mail it on Wednesday or Thursday. If you can’t mail it in by Thursday, August 25th, then we recommend holding on to it for “walk in” registration, which starts Tuesday, August 30th at 8am.
Please join us on Sunday, August 28th, 4-7pm, for our annual barbecue. Bring the whole family and come for one of the Warner community’s favorite traditions.
Interested in Volunteering?
If you would like to volunteer in a classroom or on campus, or for a WAVE event, you must complete an online application and obtain a LAUSD volunteer badge from the district.
You must wear your badge while you are volunteering on campus. All volunteers are required to complete an online application every year. Please follow the steps below:
3) If this is your first time completing an application online, do not attempt to log in. Click “Register” to register first.
4) Once your account is set up with your email, log in.
5) Start a “New Application”.
6) On Step 4-School Placement, enter your child’s information.
*Please use your child’s classroom number as the School ID.
7) After you submit the application, print it out, sign at the bottom, and bring it to the main office with your new TB test results. If your TB status is already on file (valid for 4 years), you do not need to bring a copy.
8) Read and sign the Volunteer Commitment Form in the main office. This form is also available on www.warneravenuelementary.com in the Volunteer at Warner section.
Just so you know, it doesn’t cost you any more money to shop Amazon this way. And your purchases are completely anonymous – so no one will rib you about your love of Taylor Swift or your penchant for romantic fiction.
If you can, please shop this way instead of using Amazon Smile. Warner only gets .5% on Amazon Smile vs. 4 – 8% if you shop through this link. That’s a huge difference! If our Warner families take this easy step, we can raise a lot of money for Warner with almost no extra effort. SPREAD THE WORD TO FRIENDS AND RELATIVES!
It’s so easy and our school gains so much! That’s why we’re asking everyone to make a habit of clicking on Warner’s Amazon link to do their shopping on Amazon for the rest of the year. Thanks for your support!
