Principal’s Corner – A Message from Principal Kamau
Dear Warner Community:
It is time to complete the annual School Experience Survey. The survey is completed by parents, students, teachers and staff in LAUSD schools.
One parent survey per school is distributed to each household that includes a TK-12 student. For households with more than one student enrolled in the same school, the oldest student in the school will receive the survey. Parents may complete the paper survey and return it with their child to school OR you may complete it online. Surveys will come home on Tuesday, January 26, 2016. Completing online? Have the 10-digit survey code ready before you click on the link for the appropriate survey. If you need verification that you completed the survey, you may print the last page that shows after you click submit. Please visithttps://achieve.lausd.net/Page/8397 to complete a survey online.
Student surveys are distributed in grades 3-12. The students complete the survey in school with teacher guidance.
Staff surveys for teachers, principals, administrators and all other staff may be completed online only. School Experience Surveys should be completed by all respondents by February 11, 2016.
School Experience Surveys are used to measure and rate schools as shown below under the new accountability system of CORE (California Office to Reform Education) Waiver. CORE Waiver provides a more holistic view of school and student performance than under NCLB. Core Waiver is rooted in shared learning and responsibility for student achievement. It is designed to instill a new collective and individual moral imperative to prepare all students for success.
CORE Waiver vs. NCLB: School & Student Performance

Non-Cognitive skills will be included, in addition to
measuring absentee and
suspension/expulsion
Student, staff, and parent
surveys included, in addition to Special Ed identification and ELL redesignation rates
There is a question on the survey about our Parent Center. Warner does not have a Parent Center because we are not a Title I school. The response should be N/A.
Thank you for taking the time to complete the survey. Warner’s culture and climate is increasingly growing in a positive direction. Take the time to put Warner on the list of BEST LAUSD School!
Be well: Be kind!
Save the Date – Warner Spirit Day!
Monday, February 1st is Twin Day. Monday, February 1st is Twin Day. Yes, you heard that twice.
Come dressed the same as a friend.
Sincerely,
Your Warner Student Council

A Letter from a Warner Parent
Dear fellow parents: I’m the mother to four Warner students. Even if you don’t know me, please take the time to consider these thoughts.
I asked WAVE if I could write this letter, even though I’m not on the Board or responsible for fundraising. I have developed some strong opinions after being in the front office during theDecember 2 lockdown/evacuation, sitting in on safety meetings, and then learning in the recent Monday WAVE meeting that fully 50% of our families are not donating to the Annual Fund.
In my opinion, it’s a disservice to our kids to prioritize the campus’ security while at the same time failing to support the enrichment we fund. You know all reasons to donate to the Annual Fund: computers, library, visual arts, music, P.E., class-size reduction and teaching aides. The truth is, these same positions translate to real people whom your children trust, and who help them in case of an emergency. It’s not just your children’s quality of education that is at stake with such low Fund participation — in my opinion, it’s also their emotional and physical safety in an emergency.
Without the Annual Fund, we’d have bigger classes. How much harder would that evacuation have been if each teacher had 5+ more kids to track? What if the next emergency is a major earthquake (a pretty realistic likelihood)? Are our kids safer with more students for one teacher to calm down or to administer first aid to? The Fund pays for teaching aides in every class, some of whom work in the afternoons. In an earthquake or other threat, by having a TA we’ve doubled the adults in the room who know our children and who will help protect them.
In addition, the Fund also pays for Coach Diamond, whose role goes beyond just physical education. She knows every single one of our kids and who their siblings are, and often who their caregivers are. In the Wednesday evacuation, I saw her help pair kids with adults to go home faster. And, if you think about it, our donations are the only reason we have any enrichment teachers who know every single kid across all grades. Consider for yourself what it would mean if the next lockdown happens, and your child is in the library or computer lab but there’s no Ms. Lee or Mr. Crossley. Having those tent-pole, trusted adults all our kids know contributes to their emotional well-being in an emergency.
The Annual Fund ask has never been based on fear mongering, and it shouldn’t become that. And I fully understand how hard it is to come out-of-pocket if you’re feeling unhappy or insecure with our school. But deciding only to pay for explicit security measures at the expense of the Fund, or choosing not to donate, would, to me, cut off our nose to spite our face.
If we can’t do better than 50% participation, we risk undermining our children’s safety at the exact moment when it has become a priority. If you’re one of the parents who haven’t donated to the Annual Fund, please get your questions answered, think about donating what you can, and follow through so next year’s staffing budget isn’t compromised.
Thank you for giving these thoughts your consideration.
Sarah S.
Note from WAVE Presidents: To contribute to the Annual Fund, go to store.warnerwave.com. Select option a, b or c (depending on your child’s grade) or choose your own amount. Thank you.
